Today I was reading an article at a website called Spirit Eagle and it was about taking test hikes to insure you like sleeping on the ground before doing a thru-hike. Suggesting if you don’t like to sleep on the ground you are more likely than others to not make it beyond Neel’s Gap, approximately 30 miles past Springer Mountain. There are many other things that I can imagine that would keep you from completing the thru-hike, for me this isn't one of them. I assume as I hike my body will change and I will become use to sleeping on the ground or shelter floor.  I've done several test hikes ranging from day hikes to week long backpacking, and to-date I have not become habituated to sleeping on the ground. This doesn’t deter me because I know it takes time, 6 consecutive weeks or more, for your body and mind to change so you will be comfortable sleeping on the ground. Tolerating it in the beginning is just a necessary evil to thru-hiking. To ease yourself into nights on the ground I have found several steps which can improve your comfort:

In my article "Thru-Hike Test Run" I touched on my experience with the backpack I used. The second backpack I ever purchased, Cuscus 6200ci Internal Frame , was a few pounds heavier than I wanted at 5.5 lbs. Since I got such a great deal and the Cuscus was a good backpack (except for the weight), I decided to try a different backpack made by Cuscus. I ordered the CUSCUS 5200ci Internal Frame Hiking Camp Travel Backpack for a great deal -- $52.84 delivered. It included an internal pad to protect you from the hardware inside the pack (which could also be removed to be used as a seat pad) and a built in rain cover in a pocket on the bottom of the backpack. A place inside the backpack for a hydration bottle was very handy. It also didn't have the problem with being tough to zip that the 6200ci does.

In the spring of 2011, I plan to leave my job so I can cross off an adventure on my bucket list. It will have been on the list for the last 34 years, ever since I was 14 years old and bought my first external aluminum frame, orange nylon backpack. This dream has come and gone; however, for the last year and a half it seems more real than ever. I’ve started preparing for the 2,178 miles that will take me through 14 states. It will start at Springer Mountain in Georgia and continue for six months along the Appalachian Trail until I reach Baxter Peak in Maine.

This will test my soul as nothing else has ever done. I will leave my family, the daily routine of a job and the friendships I’ve known, the comforts
